Together with his last work ‚Diary of a Mad Old Man‘ (Fûten Rôjin Nikki) the story of ‚The Key‘ gives an idea of Tanizaki’s understandig of human nature. Here sex is depicted as something about which a human being cannot do anythin, in other words, as a sort of karma which inevitably realizes itself. Through his brilliant and unconventional works he was able to break away from the arid realism that dominated Japanese fiction at the time of his appearance on the literary scene, and went on to become the most important exponent of aestheticism in recent years and a figure of unmatched stature and influence.
