The master who played an important role in the development of Japanese photography of the 20th century started at Tokyo School of Photography 1925-28, was editor of Photo Times monthly magazin from 1930 to 1934. He established Watanabe Studio in Ginza and was working for government agencies such as the ITB (International Tourist Bureau) and other culture promotion organizations. Member of the IRP (International Report Photographers Society) 1936-40. After leeding Japan Press Photography Society during the war, he became professor at university. Leading head of PSJ (Photographic Society of Japan). First director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Many awards and the first of the photographers who was granted the title of an outstandig culture promoter in Japan in 1990.–
