Antoine Maurin’s lithograph was inspired by a drawing Pierre-Paul Prud’hon exhibited at the 1801 Salon under the title ‚Le triomphe de Bonaparte, ou, La Paix‘ (The Triumph of Bonaparte, or Peace) depicting Napoleon riding on a chariot pulled by four horses and flanked by allegorical figures. While described as ’after Prud’hon’ when shown at the Salon of 1824, to circumvent the censors Napoleon was depicted in a Roman disguise, and the image was retitled ‚The Triumph of Trajan‘ (Getty Library LA)
